HONOLULU (HI Now) - Founded in 1971 by brothers Stephen and Jimmy Tsukayama, Hawaiian Island Creations started as a small surf shop in Kailua, on Oahu’s Windward shore. Fifty years and thousands of surfboards later, HIC is recognized by surfers across the globe as an icon of Hawaiian surfing.
In celebration of their 50th anniversary, they partnered with with A&B Hawaii to complete a remodel of their Kailua flagship store with a mural on the makai and mauka sides of the building. Kailua born artist Sara Saffery designed 2 murals with the help of Muralist Kamea Hadar, that is inspired by the Hawaiian history, mele and mo’olelo of Kailua.
In addition, Hawaiian Island Creations will be taking pieces from the mural to create merchandise which will raise funds for the Ulupo Heiau in Kailua.
