Kumu Hula Kaʻilihiwa Vaughan-Darval Shares Her Passion for Hula

Sponsored by Spectrum

HONOLULU (HI Now) - Kumu Hula Ka’ilihiwa Vaughan-Darval is only one of five women in the history of hula to hold both of hula’s most coveted titles. However, her crowning achievement is her most recent iteration as Kumu Hula who reigns over Hālau Hula Ka Lehua Tuahine.

She hails from an impressive lineage; Palani Vaughan is her father remembered as a beloved musician and historian and her mother is Ipolani Vaughan, a much revered and cherished kumu hula and Hawaiian language teacher. When Kumu Hiwa speaks you understand that she welcomes the kuleana of passing on what she knows to the next generation of knowledge keepers, her keiki hula dancers.

Kumu Hiwa and 30 other kumu hula will show us how they prepare for hula performances in the Queen Liliʻuokalani Keiki Hula Celebration, which runs Monday through Thursday on K5.
