Water Wisdom Wednesday: Conserving water through the usage of rain barrels The Board of Water Supply is here to teach us how to easily conserve water through the usage of rain barrels!

HONOLULU (HI Now) - Now more than ever, it’s important to stay conscious and conserve water in any way possible. The Board of Water Supply is back with another Water Wisdom Wednesday to teach us how to easily conserve water with the usage of rain barrels!

Besides turning off the water when brushing your teeth or taking shorter showers, rain barrels are a great way to reduce water use for those who live in houses. It is estimated that approximately one half of household water use goes toward the outdoors whether it’s to water our lawns, gardens, or clean our cars. Instead of using potable water, we can harvest rainwater. It not only helps conserve our drinking water supply, it also helps to reduce our water bill without depriving our lawns and gardens of water.

A rain barrel can be placed near your roof’s gutter downspouts or wherever the most water falls from your roof top. For every one inch of rainfall, up to 600 gallons of water can be collected from a1,000-square foot rooftop. That’s the equivalent of enough water to fill 12large fish tanks!
