HPU helps freshmen transition into their college journey through University 1000 Seminar

Sponsored by Hawaii Pacific University

HONOLULU (HI Now) - Hawai’i Pacific University welcomed a record number of new students in Fall 2021, representing a 54 percent year-over-year increase in new, first-time freshmen. One way the University supports the success of its newest students is by offering the University 1000 seminar course, a required course for first-time, full-time freshmen. This past fall, HPU had 26 sections of the University 1000 course. In a team-taught approach, a faculty member and a staff member lead the section with a peer mentor, adding the student perspective.

HPU launched the University 1000 course in fall 2020 --its first semester of a return to in-person, on-campus courses since the start of the pandemic. New students had extra support from the university ‘ohana to navigate their new university journey and adjust to living in a new normal with the pandemic.

The University has seen the positive results of providing first-year students with the University 1000 course. Last academic year, more than 90% of the students who successfully completed the course in the fall had re-enrolled for the spring term. HPU anticipates similar re-enrollment success this academic year and is committed to the continued offering of this first-year student experience course.
