Na Kama Kai celebrates 10th annual Pa’akai Gala in honor of Aunty Rell Sunn

Sponsored by Na Kama Kai

Na Kama Kai’s mission is to empower the youth by connecting them to the ocean, creating independence and self-respect for the environment and themselves. “We’ve been going for 13 years now, putting children in the ocean, sometimes up to 3,000 keiki a year,” says Duane DeSoto, Founder and CEO of Na Kama Kai.

Every month, Na Kama Kai hosts a free ocean clinic at different locations on the island, which changes moku’s to create access. Their Alaka’i program is a mentorship program that involves 20 keiki committing to one year of service learning and teaching other youths. Na Kama Kai is also excited to announce their new headquarters, Halau Na Kama Kai, located at Poka’i Bay. There, they will have afterschool and weekend programming for children.

On October 2nd, Na Kama Kai will be hosting their 10th annual Pa’akai Gala and will be honoring Aunty Rell Sunn. They will also be honoring Alicia Higa as their Ho’okele recipient. Duane DeSoto, Kimie Miner, Paula Fuga, and the Haku Keiki wrote six original songs that they will perform at the Gala along with an original oli. There’s also a silent auction with amazing donations from Patagonia, Kona Brewing Company, and a surfboard from Carissa Moore! The auction will run for four days, and Duane says the chances of winning something is pretty open due to the schedule.
