City Mill has partnered with local native plant nursery Hui Ku Maoli Ola to help preserve Hawaii’s native greenery. Their plants can all be grown in full sun or partial shade and are very hardy and forgiving plants, making them perfect for first time gardeners. All 8 City Mills now carry a wide variety of plants, but inventory varies from location to location. Native or endemic means that the plants naturally found their way and are exclusively grown on the islands.
Use these tips when repotting your Hui Ku Maoli Ola plants. Katherine Hachmeister of City Mill Kaimuki suggests using Black Gold all purpose soil. “It’s a great soil, it’s a great mix. You don’t need to add anything to it,” says Katherine. Fill your new pot halfway with soil so the plant sits nicely inside. Carefully squeeze the old pot to loosen the root ball and place the plant inside the new pot. Put a small amount of soil to cover the top and fill the empty spaces.
