Manoa Honey highlights Hawaii’s tropical flavors through craft mead series

There’s no better way to start the weekend than with a cocktail in hand, but have you ever heard of Mead? It’s a type of honey wine and HI Now host Kainoa Carlson with Yuki Uzuhashi, owner of Manoa Honey & Mead, to learn more about the specialty local product.

Mānoa Honey is a beekeeping company based on Oahu offering a variety of tropical honey and specialty hive products. The small, family-owned and operated beekeeping company is made up of teams of beekeepers and a honey house crew, working hard every day – just like bees!

Mānoa Honey was started in 1989 in Oahu’s Mānoa Valley, and today the company raises bees all around the island. One of its apiaries is on the slopes of the iconic Diamond Head Crater, where its Crater Kiawe Honey is harvested. On the other side of the island, its bees forage on Christmas Berry blossoms near the coastline of the North Shore. Then there’s the hot, dry west side of Oahu, a prime location for its White Kiawe Honey. Mānoa Honey harvests fresh bee pollen daily in central Oahu, and every apiary has unique flora that creates special and distinguished honey products.

Honeybees make honey, one of the world’s most delicious and nutritious sweeteners, but they also play a very important role in the food chain. Bees are one of the most important pollinators, not only to cultivated crops, but also to wild plants which are essential habitat for hundreds of wild creatures. As one of the few beekeeping companies on Oahu, Mānoa Honey takes great pride in helping bees thrive in this remote and fragile ecosystem.
