Hawaii State FCU recently opened its 12th branch, a temporary pop-up location in the heart of Downtown Honolulu’s Civic Center, in a building that will serve as the future headquarters of the credit union. The branch currently serves as an experimental hub to test new technologies and customer experiences while still assisting members with their financial needs. HI Now host Kanoe Gibson went to check it out.
The Queen Street Branch is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. At just 400 square feet, the branch is Hawaii State FCU’s smallest location. That may seem pretty small, but because the credit union has found ways to integrate state-of-the-art technology into its operations, the branch is able to offer most financial services that you’d find in a larger, more traditional branch.
“This pop-up location is our first all-digital concept branch, where we’re looking at how we can continue to provide the same service that our members have come to expect but in a smaller footprint,” says Branch Manager Kathy Higa.
The location is a pop-up branch, meaning that it’s a temporary location as the credit union’s future headquarters take shape. Eventually plans are for this branch to give way to a larger, permanent branch that will serve our members and neighbors in Downtown Honolulu.

The branch is equipped with two state-of-the-art Integrated Teller Machines (ITMs). These machines allow you to make transfers and loan payments, even withdraw cash in multiple denominations and deposit up to 50 checks at a time. The ITMs also use palm vein scanners that allow members to safely and securely access accounts without having to pull out an ID card. All it takes is a simple wave of the hand.
“We’re happy to be able to give our members another convenient downtown option to handle their financial needs,” Higa says.
