Especially during these tough economic times, Hawaii State FCU understands the importance of providing financial education and partnering with other like-minded organizations dedicated to providing the tools, resources and support to help our local communities continue to thrive.
That’s why the credit union has built a strong relationship with the Hawaii HomeOwnership Center, a local organization dedicated to providing the education, information and support to create successful first-time homeowners in Hawaii. By increasing rates of home ownership, the Hawaii HomeOwnership Center aims to build stronger families and communities in Hawaii.
Hawaii State FCU has supported Hawaii HomeOwnership Center for a number of years. Earlier this year, the credit union donated $5,000 to support its continued efforts to educate, counsel and coach local homeowners.
“We not only provide classes and education for first-time homebuyers, but we also work with current homebuyers and renters who might be experiencing challenges related to housing or homeownership,” says Executive Director Reina Miyamoto.

One of the services Hawaii HomeOwnership Center now offers is foreclosure prevention counseling.
“We know that a lot of people have had their incomes impacted by COVID and this often puts a strain on their ability to keep up with their mortgage,” Miyamoto says. “Our counselors work with you to review your options, teach you how to create emergency budgets, and identify resources that can assist you with your situation. We also offer renters counseling as well.”
Ultimately, Hawaii HomeOwnership Center wants Hawaii homeowners to know that they don’t have to go through this time alone and that the experts there are able to help and listen.
“One of the most popular educational programs that Hawaii HomeOwnership Center offers is our first-time home buyer education classes,” Miyamoto says. “Purchasing a home is a big life decision and can be a scary process for someone who hasn’t gone through it before. Our classes give people an idea of what to expect, how to financially prepare, mistakes to avoid and resources that can help them along their home-buying journey.”
Most of our classes are normally offered in a traditional classroom setting at facilities in Chinatown. However, in light of the pandemic, all in-person classes are now offered as webinars online. Anyone interested in registering for a webinar, scheduling an appointment or learning more about the classes offered can call at (808) 523-9500 or visit hihomeownership.org.

Hawaii State FCU has always been a strong believer in the positive impact that education can have in helping people make smart financial decisions and get on a path to a better financial future.
“In addition to the resources and financial education we offer through the credit union, we find that it’s also vital for us to support the efforts of organizations like Hawaii HomeOwnership Center,” says Hawaii State FCU President & CEO Andrew Rosen. “Having more resources like HHOC ensures that we all have more options, more educational opportunities, and more support available to our local families and communities.”
