The current global pandemic has brought about extremely uncertain times for many people. In Hawaii, thousands of residents are feeling the financial strain, as jobs are reduced or eliminated due to the economic fallout. Hawaii State FCU, like many local businesses, wants to let its members know that the credit union is there for them during these challenging times.

“These have been truly unprecedented times, unlike anything we’ve seen in the credit union’s more than 80-year history. Almost every industry across the board is taking a hit,” says Andrew Rosen, president and CEO of Hawaii State FCU. “As Hawaii’s largest credit union, Hawaii State FCU is financially sound, but just as many others, the economic effects of this pandemic will ultimately affect our bottom line.”

As a not-for-profit, member-owned cooperative, Hawaii State FCU worries less about the money it makes and more about the well-being of both its members and employees. Not only their health and safety, which is very important, but their financial well-being.

“If there’s one thing we want our members to understand, it’s that ‘always right by you,’ is more than our tagline, it’s our promise that we’re always here for them. We will continue to do right by them even during challenging times,” says Rosen.

One of the credit union is doing that is with the launch of its Emergency Assistance Program, which is designed to offer quick financial relief for our members. You can get access to money with an emergency assistance loan, defer loan payments on existing consumer loans and mortgages, and Hawaii State FCU is also waiving early withdrawal feels on our term-share accounts.

“We understand the enormous financial difficulties the pandemic has caused, and we want them to know that we’re standing with them through it all,” Rosen explains.

Although several of its branches have been temporarily closed to minimize health risks to members and employees, most of the credit union’s branches that remain open have temporary extended hours to provide added convenience.

Hawaii State FCU has also made changes to its branch set-ups to encourage proper social distancing. Hand sanitizing areas have been installed for members and partitions have even been placed at teller windows.

“In addition, we’ve also reserved the first hour of operation at our branches to serving our seniors and those with serious pre-existing conditions in an effort to protect this high-risk group of members,” Rosen says.
