Between food, gifts and festivities, the holiday season can often leave your wallet feeling a little thin. However, as we prepare for the New Year, we can always resolve to saving better and making good financial choices! To help with this, Hawaii State FCU has come up with some suggestions to make financial resolutions for the new year that you can stick to!

Resolution #1: Envision your financial goals for the year

Goals come in every size. They can be larger, like saving towards a down payment on a home, or smaller like making regular contributions to a retirement or savings account. A great way to keep yourself accountable is by putting your goals on paper. You can make it fun by creating a vision board with pictures of the goals you’re working towards. Once you’re done, you can put your board up somewhere at home or in the office where you’ll see it often to keep you motivated!

Resolution #2: Make a Budget

Creating budgets and sticking to them will help you avoid spending extra money that can go towards meeting your goals.

Even a simple budget that outlines your daily living expenses, and allocates amounts for items like groceries and entertainment, can keep your spending in check and make sure you’re not spending more than you need to.

Resolution #3: Work on eliminating unnecessary expenses

Take the time to Sit down and list all the different things you spend money on during a typical week.

Are bills for vanilla lattes and eating out making frequent appearances on your list? Well, those dollars can easily add up!

Try bringing home lunch or brewing your coffee at home before you leave for work. Even simple changes can help you save money in a huge way!

Resolution #4: Commit to getting financially educated

There are a lot of great resources you can look into to educate yourself on financial basics. Hawaii State FCU offers free seminars covering a range of topics throughout the year. The credit union also has a wealth of information and online learning tools that cover different financial topics at HawaiiStateFCU.com. For more complex financial goals, you may want to set up an appointment to talk to an expert like a tax advisor, mortgage professional or financial consultant, who can advise you on the best path toward achieving your goals.

Resolution #5: Celebrate the victories

Saving is hard work! So don’t forget to celebrate small victories. Maybe you brought home-lunch to work for an entire month… celebrate by treating yourself to a plate lunch! Whatever you do, remember that short-term savings is just as important as long-term.

So buckle down and make your financial goals a reality!
