It’s Travel Tuesday and HI Now host Jobeth Devera is taking us to her final stop in Washington State, to the small town of Bothell, about 20 miles north of Seattle.

In 1931, the city’s first junior high school was built and Jobeth is bringing us back to the historic building – but, don’t expect your typical classes.

“McMenamins Anderson School was converted into many things,” said General Manager Jared Prince. “We are a hotel, we have three restaurants on the property, some small bars, a movie theater, gardens and a pool.”

One of the restaurants, Tavern on the Square, was formerly the school’s cafeteria.

And inside the hotel, a cozy, intimate room – which was once the Principal’s Office – has been converted into a bar.

“In the morning time, it serves as a place where hotel guests can go get coffee, pastries from the bakery, or espresso,” Prince said.

Next stop on the campus tour is the Woodshop, which is now the school’s sports bar – no hall pass needed here. And right next door, crafting of another sort takes place.

“Here at the Anderson School, we are a brewery and all of our beer is made here,” said Prince.

Here is where Brew Master Mike Green teaches Jobeth how to make Sunflower IPA.

Prince said the property also makes it own wine and owns two distilleries.

Haynes Hall was formerly the school’s gymnasium and is now used as a venue for events like weddings and corporate meetings.

And the school’s pool and bleachers are now home to another restaurant on the property, The North Shore Pub. It serves Tiki-style, island-inspired food and cocktails.

So come and check out McMenamins Anderson School, in session daily.
