Hawaii State FCU is partnering with the Center for Tomorrow’s Leaders (CTL) to help students build a solid foundation for personal money management. CTL is in the business of developing young leaders for Hawaii, working every day to engage, equip and empower Hawaii’s youth to become tomorrow’s visionary leaders.
Currently, CTL offers weekly leadership development courses to more than 400 students in classrooms of participating schools across the state. It partners with Hawaii businesses and organizations such as Hawaii State FCU to help enrich the leadership curriculum to provide mentorship and real-life experience to their young leaders through classes and guest speakers.
CTL feels it is very important for future leaders to be financially literate and to be prepared for the real world. Hawaii State FCU has been a tremendous resource by coming directly into classrooms to teach students about real-life financial topics they wouldn’t normally learn about. It teaches students everything from basic budgeting and balancing a checking account to learning about the power of saving and what harm debt can do to your credit. Financing higher education has also been of extreme interest for high school students preparing for college.
Living in Hawaii does not come cheap. The earlier kids understand that, the better off they will be. CTL believes a lot of the money problems Hawaii residents are facing could have been avoided if financial literacy were taught in the schools. All students should learn how to budget, live within their means, save and avoid credit card debt. These financial education seminars that Hawaii State FCU provides are helping students build strong money habits early on and helping them avoid making mistakes that lead to lifelong money struggles. It can be also very rewarding for the students to create financial goals and plan ahead to save for items such as new shoes or even a new car.
Hawaii State FCU strongly believes in empowering people to make smart money decisions and that it’s never too early to start. It’s committed to providing the resources for students, and the community at large, to take control of their finances so they can pay for their education, buy that first home or save for retirement.
