Hurricane season in Hawaii spans from June through November, so it’s important to always be prepared ahead of potential severe weather! This includes preparing your home in order to protect your pets.

When it comes to protecting your pets during a potential disaster situation, it’s important to prepare a space to keep them safe and at ease. For example, if you have an outdoor pet, it’s a good idea to create a space inside for them since flying debris and heavy rains can be dangerous. Some pets may also get spooked easily and escape your yard and become lost. To prepare for this scenario, consider getting your pet microchipped.

In regards to food and water, it is a good idea to have at least a three day supply. Food should be stored in a an airtight, waterproof container and remember to have bowls on hand as well. Some other important items to have would be any pertinent medications, collars and leashes, and even a litter box with some litter for cats.

Some general things you can do to keep your pets less anxious during a scary time is creating a safe space for them somewhere in the house. This could either be a crate that they enjoy sleeping in or just a room that they may feel comfortable in as well. Other things would be to have some background noise going to distract them from what may be going on outside. Some pets that have extreme anxiety or “storm or noise phobia” may need special medications to help them cope with the situation. For these pets, you should contact your veterinarian and keep some of these medications on hand just in case.

Pets most definitely feed off of your energy, so it’s best to keep as calm as you can in order to help them through a scary time.
