Maui resident Hezekiah Kapuaala found out he was the winner of the University of Hawaii at Mānoa's #TakeMeToManoa contest live on Hawaii News Now Sunrise. The contest, which launched earlier this year, offered local students a chance to win a free year of tuition at UH Mānoa. Applicants had to create videos about why the university was the right fit for them and post them on social media by March 28

Kapuaala, a self-avowed creative, recorded a minute-long video about the difference a free year of tuition could make in his life. “I feel that Mānoa will help me get closer and closer to my dreams,” he said.
This is the third year that UH Mānoa and UH Federal Credit Union have offered the #TakeMeToManoa scholarship. “UHFCU was founded on the critical importance of the UH system, as well as giving back to our members and local communities,” said Stacey Robinol, VP of member experience at UH Federal Credit Union.
Kapuaala was thrilled to learn he won the scholarship on air. “When they came in with that big check, and the teachers with the leis and the Mānoa gear, I was like, ‘This can’t be real,'” he said.
