Rusty’s Hawaiian: Award-winning coffees from Hawaii Island’s Ka’u District

100 percent island coffees

Sponsored by Hawaii State Department of Agriculture

If you’re a coffee lover, it’s time to listen up! HI Now hosts Kanoe Gibson and Kainoa Carlson are starting their day by tasting a few different blends from Rusty’s Hawaiian — a family business on the Big Island.

On the menu today is the Ka’u Classic Medium Roast followed by the Ka’u Classic Dark Roast. Both of these come from the family’s farm in the Ka’u District. Both blends are actually from the same coffee beans, but roasted to different degrees. The medium roast has a bright, brown-sugar sweetness and citrus and floral notes. Those are the beans you’ll want to reach for when you’re drinking coffee by itself. On the other hand, the dark roast is full bodied and smooth, with dark chocolate and cherry notes. Reach for this coffee when you want a drink to pair with desserts!

Rusty’s Hawaiian coffee has won numerous awards, and it all started in 2010 when the Speciality Coffee Association of Europe gave Lorie Obra its “Outstanding Producer” award. They selected her of all the coffee farmers in the world that year. In 2012, Rusty’s Hawaiian grew one of the 10 best coffees in the world. This “Coffees of the Year” competition had more than 250 entries from 26 countries that year. Then in 2018, Forbes magazine named Rusty’s Hawaiian one of the 12 best coffee roasters in the United States.
