Holy Nativity School
On the east side of Oahu is a privately run school teaching children from age three through eighth grade. Holy Nativity School is the first educational institution in Hawaii to incorporate computational thinking into the curriculum. What is that, you ask? Students are engaged in critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity using logical thought, precision and data management. Head of school Dr. Tim Spurrier and student council president, 7th grader Brooke Eglinton, shared with Hawaii Now details about this personalized approach to education.
About Holy Nativity School
Holy Nativity School has a rich history of providing a personalized approach to learning in a small, intimate setting for students starting school as three-years-old and continuing on through the 8th grade. Small classes, nurturing teachers, challenging curriculum, and integrated technology create the foundation that has continually encouraged outstanding achievements as HNS students display the inherent pleasure of lifelong learning.
In the Episcopal tradition, the school has created an open and supportive academic community of faith for all. Children grow, develop, and learn at different rates and stages. The growth and development of each child involves many dimensions: heart, mind, body, and soul. The school’s talented and committed teachers provide individualized attention to help each student achieve his or her academic and personal best. Teachers also enjoy the independence to develop programs and courses that reflect their creativity, keep their classrooms fresh, and most importantly engage their students.
This one-class-per-grade school includes facilities more often seen at larger schools—three playfields, a full-size gymnasium, art room, performing arts room and computer lab—on a beautiful and open, safe and quiet two-acre campus. A student-designed, eco-friendly playground, built by the school and local community, and October’s successful annual Great Pumpkin Festival give the HNS community much to celebrate.
