Sponsored by Reforest Hawaii
For every ʻukulele that is built, Kanileʻa ʻUkulele plants a Hawaiian endemic tree through its Reforest Hawaii program. The goal is not to build more instruments, but to help preserve Hawaii’s natural forests. HI Now host Kanoe Gibson is with co-owners Joe and Kristen Souza on Hawaii Island to talk about their mission.
In July of 2014, the Souzas acquired a parcel of land on Hawaii Island for the purpose of restoring the native Hawaiian forest in the uplands of Kealakekua. The small tract of rainforest, primarily koa and `ōhia lehua trees, was dubbed Nani `Ekolu to represent their three sons (Kaimana, `Iokepa and Kahiau), the three surrounding mountains (Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Hualālai) and the three greatest things (faith, hope and love).
After spending time at Nani `Ekolu and seeing the impact of the native Hawaiian rain forest on the state’s ecology, the couple came to realize that they wanted to leave more than just an `ukulele-building business for their progeny and that it was about leaving a better, healthier planet for them as well.
Kanileʻa ʻUkulele encourages anyone interest to sponsor a tree. You’ll receive a certificate of planting along with the RFID number and coordinates so you can visit the tree you sponsored virtually on Google Earth. Sponsoring a tree is a wonderful way to commemorate a big moment like a baby’s birth, an anniversary, a graduation, or even in memory of a loved one.
