Virtual gala aims to honor outstanding Native Hawaiians
Sponsored by Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce
The Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce (NHCC) is a non-profit organization that provides programs for the Native Hawaiian business community and scholarship funds for Native Hawaiian students pursuing a degree in business. As part of its fundraising efforts, NHCC holds an annual event, the ‘Ō’ō Awards Gala, which is centered around honoring outstanding Native Hawaiians who have made significant contributions toward advancement and increased vibrancy within the Hawaiian community.
The premiere of the 44th Annual ʻŌʻō Awards will air on Hawaii News Now on KGMB on December 26, 2020 at 6 p.m. A rebroadcast will air on December 27 at 10:30 p.m. on KHNL and on December 28 at 8 p.m. on K5, and the event will also be available at hawaiinewsnow.com to stream online.
This year’s award recipients are: Beadie Kanahele Dawson, Melody MacKenzie and Judge Melvin Soong (retired). Due to COVID-19, the non-profit was unable to hold the gala as an in-person event as has traditionally been done since the award was first given in 1977. Nonetheless, NHCC felt it was important to close out the year with proper recognition of these honorees, which led to this reimagined, virtual version of the gala.
NHCC invites the public to tune in for an inspiring evening! The gala will be hosted by McKenna Maduli and in addition to interviews with the award recipients, it will also feature musical performances by Mailani Makainai along with testimonials that highlight the history of the ‘Ōʻō Award, the impact of the ‘Ōʻō Award and the future of NHCC.
The mission of the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce is to “mālama Native Hawaiians in business and commerce through leadership, relationships and connections to economic resources and opportunities.” In 2021, NHCC is excited to grow its chamber; to utilize technology to provide a better member experience and increase organizational efficiency; find new ways of highlighting and showcasing our members; and deliver programs and services that will provide value to its members.
