Mommy Matters: Family Birth Center at Kapiolani Medical Center provides quality care for mom and baby

Sponsored by Kapiolani Medical Center

Pregnancy is a time of great joy, and a time when your expectations turn to doing what’s best for your baby. Kapi’olani Medical Center has been bringing babies into the world for more than 100 years and offers the most comprehensive maternity and newborn care in the Pacific Region. HI Now host Jobeth Devera sat down with Ona Bohatch to talk about the care families can expect at the hospital’s Family Birth Center.

The Family Birth Center is where expecting moms will go to deliver their babies. It features a triage area where patients are assessed and evaluated to determine labor status. It also has ample labor, delivery, and recovery rooms along with three large cesarean delivery rooms.

A service offered at the Family Birth Center that many may not be familiar with is antepartum care. This is care for women who require hospitalization during their pregnancy due to complications for themselves or their unborn baby and can be hospitalized for a few weeks or a few months. Its antepartum team not only supports women with the medical care they need, but also provides activities to help make their stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. These activities include afternoon tea and games that provide the opportunity for them to mingle and interact with other moms who are going through the same thing.

Kapiolani is recognized as Hawaii’s leader in the care of women, infants and children, and one of the reasons it has that recognition is because of its medical professionals. It is the only hospital in the state with physicians (neonatologists) specializing in newborn care on-site 24-hours a day. No one can predict when a baby will be born, but at Kapiolani, physicians are already there to provide babies with immediate care at delivery if needed.

Physicians at Kapiolani are experts in high-risk pregnancies and help manage the health concerns of moms and babies both prior to, during and after delivery. Its team works hand-in-hand with a patients’ OB-GYN to ensure a smooth and safe delivery for mom and baby.
