It’s a story of love and hope and one of strength and sacrifice. “A Timeless Princess,” an original musical centered around Princess Kaiulani written and produced by Denny Miyasato, will be presented at the Mamiya Theatre from July 11 – 14 and July 18 – 21, 2019.
The musical tells the story of a present-day serviceman who is transported back in time 120 years, arriving on the streets of a bustling Honolulu to a world of struggle and strife amongst mounting tensions and a heated social and political landscape. He is enchanted by a young Princess Kaiulani and a captivating story unfolds.
In 2001, inspired by a book entitled “The Betrayal of Liliuokalani,” Miyasato wrote “This Dance,” a song imagining Princess Kaiulani dancing through the halls of Iolani Palace. It was a total departure from the type of music he typically writes. “This gave me the idea to do something I never considered – writing a musical,” he says. “In eight months, a project that had started years ago on a laptop in a Las Vegas hotel room was born in ‘A Timeless Princess’ in October of 2017.”
“The quality of this production is really something special,” Miyasato says. The all-star cast includes pop sensation Ciana Pelekai, Cathy Foy and Jade Stice, who plays Queen Liliuokalani. “Michael Ng is the incredibly talented director,” he says. “We have sets, costumes, hair and makeup by James Corry who worked on Broadway for years.”
Although the musical is an all-new production, Ciana Pelekai, the Waianae native and graduate of Radford High School playing Princess Kaiulani, says it’s a story that everyone can relate to. “It weaves the past with the present in what really is a love story,” she says. “One between two people and another about the love of a Queen for her people.”
