Looking to buy a home? Realtors say now is the time to scope out the suburbs

Helping local families make homeownership a reality

Due to the current situation, the experts at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Hawaii Realty are seeing heightened activity in the suburbs. HI Now host Kainoa Carlson spoke with one of its realtor associates to get some advice for local families who are wondering if homeownership is the next step for them.

“We’re seeing a vibrant real estate market right now,” says Realtor Associate Claudine Yim. “Despite what is happening in the world, in general year over year and month over month stats indicate people are still buying and selling property!”

Yim says she’s especially seeing increased activity in communities considered the suburbs as people over the past few months have realized new ways of living and working while spending more time at home.

“These are neighborhoods like Kaneohe, Mililani and Kapolei,” she adds. “Many people are realizing that they have the opportunity to work at home long term and want a home that they want to spend that kind of time in.”

Yim explains that the suburbs often allow buyers to get more space for their money and with more people working from home and less worried about their commute, the suburbs offer an attractive lifestyle. Living arrangements may also be changing where households merge to create multi-generational homes. That way, family members can help each other with childcare and expenses. Yim says the suburbs are a good fit for those types of changes.

For families looking to buy a home, Yim recommends finding an agent who listens to what you want and is willing to work with you on your ideal timeline.

“The right agent will work with you to guide you, advise you and help you however they can achieve your goal,” she says.
