Owner and baker has developed nearly 400 cheesecake flavors
It’s the Fall season, and you know what that means — pumpkin treats are popping up across the islands! Believe it or not, there’s actually a whole day dedicated to Pumpkin Cheesecake, and this year it’s taking place on October 21. HI Now host Kanoe Gibson is sampling some of Hawaii’s best cheesecake from Otto Cake courtesy of owner and baker Scott “Otto” McDonough.
McDonough makes all of his cheesecakes from scratch. He has developed over 286 flavors and up to nine of those are available in the bakery each day. By following the shop on Instagram @ottocake_official, you’ll always be able to know what’s on the menu and see the newest flavors he’s trying out.
McDonough cheesecake phenomenon started in 1990 when he made a cake for his mom for Mother’s Day. After taking a cheesecake to a potluck and getting eight orders on the spot, the rest is history! Due to high demand, and after his cheesecakes were available in specialty coffee shops and art houses, the original Otto Cake Bakery opened near the Honolulu airport in 1996. Otto Cake is now located in Honolulu’s Kaimuki neighborhood.
This year, Otto Cake is celebrating its 30th anniversary. For Halloween, Otto Cake is featuring special flavors like Snickers, Butterfinger, and even one called 3D Cheesecake which is red and blue velvet to represent 3D glasses.
In addition to the delicious cheesecakes, Otto Cake also sells carrot cake, coffee cake, brownies, milkshakes (lilikoi, chocolate espresso, and other seasonal flavors), Otto Chocolate, and cheesecake sandwiches — all handmade from scratch.
