Local artists bring Pearlridge Center’s rich history to life

Sponsored by Pearlridge Center

As Pearlridge Center unveils its newly renovated downtown location, Wai Makai, the center is showcasing its rich history by incorporating the historical ahupua’a of Kalauao in its design. Local artists Colleen Kimura and Harinani Orme were commissioned to bring that history to life and put it on display.

Kimura and Orme created 11 original paintings for the renovated Wai Makai. These paintings were then translated into wood carvings used on panels for the Center Court area as well as into ceramic and glass tiles. The large-scale paintings use imagery from the area around the mall, including the harbor, fishponds, and the sea.

As part of grand opening festivities, a Heritage Center will open at Wai Makai to tell the story of Pearlridge Center and the surrounding area. The installation will showcase the tools, art supplies and art materials used by Kimura and Orme to create the original works of art displayed throughout all three levels of Pearlridge Wai Makai.

To give the community a more intimate opportunity to experience the power of the art, a temporary art gallery will open at Pearlridge Wai Makai on the second level for a special one-day display of Kimura and Orme’s original paintings during the grand opening on Friday, February 8.
