The City and County’s Honolulu Liquor Commission is continuing its efforts to prevent underage drinking with the campaign, “Don’t Drown your Future,” by partnering with Kaiser High School. Madison Mora is a senior at the high school and a member of the Lady Cougars Varsity Soccer Team. She has a bright future ahead of her as an athlete in Minnesota, as she recently committed to play at Saint Mary’s University.

“I’ve been playing soccer since I was five years old, and started competitively when I was 10,” Mora explains. She says she really got interested when she found out it could help her go to college.

Mora has always had a great support system in her family. She says her mother always told her to focus on both her academics and sports skills. Her commitment to not participating in underage drinking is a reflection of her dedication to her goals.

“A lot of teens are drinking today, and I think that the main cause is peer pressure,” she explains. “A lot of friends tend to pressure their friends so they can feel accepted, and I don’t think drinking is helping them succeed for their future.”

Mora says Having a law against underage drinking helps teens have a chance at a bright future — through sports, academics, or any goal they choose. To a younger generation who she hopes will make the same commitment, she has this to say:

“Life can get hard sometimes, but all you gotta do is keep focused on your goals,” she explains. “Have a good support system. Talk to your family about your goals, talk to you friends about your goals… If they’re on the same page, that’s great. If they’re not, then don’t be friend with them.”

Mora hopes to become a physician assistant and hopefully earn a Master’s Degree in Health Science of Physician Assistant Studies.

The Honolulu Liquor Commission is always looking for partners to get involved in its cause. If you have a story you’d like to share about why you are taking a stand against underage drinking, email liq-media@honolulu.gov.
