Kahulale’a celebrates hula with Merrie Monarch-inspired collection

During Merrie Monarch week, the Grand Naniloa Hotel hosts the Hawaii Fashion Showcase. HI Now guest host Lacy Deniz takes a look at some of the designs from one of the featured brands in this year's showcase, Kahulale'a.

Kahulale’a was created when founder Kehau Nielsen decided to upcycle her old hula costumes into small accessories. From there, she built her brand, which now has its own storefront in Ala Moana Center.

For this collection, Nielsen drew on her hula background as inspiration. She uses velvet, bias-cut skirts, and fresh takes on traditional Hawaiian prints in her garments. To celebrate Merrie Monarch, Kahulale’a is releasing three new prints.

The Hawaii Fashion Showcase will air June 28 at 7 p.m. on K5 with encore airings on June 29 at 9:35 p.m. on K5, June 30 at 9 p.m. on KHNL, and July 4 at 10:35 p.m. on KGMB.
