How local businesses keep McDonald’s golden arches glowing

McDonald's Proudly Serving Aloha Since 1968

HI Now is continuing its 5-part series celebrating the 50th Anniversary of McDonald’s in Hawaii. Big Macs, Quarter Pounders with Cheese, Chicken McNuggets, McCafé’s and those world-famous golden French fries are just some of our McDonald’s favorites. But with 74 restaurants to supply throughout Hawaii, have you ever wondered how McDonald’s keeps up with all that demand? Well, it’s simple: great local partners. Today, we are getting a peek into one Hawaii business that keeps those Golden Arches glowing.

For 49 years, McDonald’s has been serving up Hawaii Coffee Company’s Royal Kona Coffee in all of its Hawaii restaurants, starting with the first restaurant in Aina Haina. So what is the secret to the long partnership? Hawaii Coffee Company has worked hand-in-hand with McDonald’s over the years. For example, when McDonald’s was looking for a premium coffee, Royal Kona Coffee stepped up and developed the premium roast Royal Kona 10% Kona Blend, which continues to be served in all 74 McDonald’s of Hawaii restaurants today.

About the partnership
Lion Coffee is able to deliver a premium product because it only purchases the best coffee beans from Kona farmers. Lion Coffee mills its coffee cherries at their facility in Kona, then ships the beans to Honolulu for roasting. Once the beans arrive at the roastery in Kalihi, they are roasted and packed under the oversight of our Quality Assurance Manager, using state-of-the-art equipment, some of the highest caliber in Hawaii.  The combination of highest quality beans, the best equipment, and stringent quality control make Royal Kona 10% Kona Blend a premium coffee. In addition, Lion Coffee is the only McDonald’s coffee partner in the nation that provides and services the coffee equipment at each McDonald’s restaurants. In fact, Royal Kona Coffee was the only McDonald’s partner from Hawaii to have been named the Partner of the Year by McDonald’s National Supply Leadership Council. This honor was given to them in 2014.
