With the high levels of stress today, many people are looking for ways to manage it. Acupuncture may be a good option, and it can also help boost fertility. HMAA has partnered with Maunakea Acupuncture & Wellness Center to make these services more accessible for its members.

Acupuncture is a natural medicine, and it has an accumulative effect. It helps to improve blood circulation, reduce inflammation, calm down the nervous system, increase energy level and improves quality of sleep.

“Often when people are asked about acupuncture, they either will react with great conviction, like they strongly believe it, or they will be scared and get goosebumps just thinking about needles,” says owner Mei-Lin Maunakea. “I feel, and some patients who used to be afraid of needles feel this way too after experiencing acupuncture, that the benefits outweigh the fear of needles.”

Acupuncture has been around for over 3,000 years. It is just one treatment modality used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and it can help treat many ailments, especially in pain management and regulating the hormone system.

“The treatment is not painful,” Maunakea says. “Believe it or not, 99 percent of my patients fall asleep during their treatment and feel rejuvenated afterwards. Some of my patients comment that they get their best rest during an acupuncture treatment.”

Acupuncture is also a great way to support fertility treatments such as IVF and can help increase their chance of getting pregnant. It can take at least three months for the physiological changes to take place and have a lasting effect on the body, but the sooner the patient can start with acupuncture the better.

In fertility, acupuncture helps to improve blood flow to the uterus, eliminate any blockages that might prevent pregnancy from occurring, helps to build the quality of the egg, increase the number of follicles produced by the ovaries and reduce stress signals in the body overall.

“Acupuncture can done at any time during pregnancy and even after child birth,” says Maunakea. “I have treated patients from fertility to pregnancy to labor induction to post-partum depression.”
