The HI Now Live music series is back on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at its new home: Mangiamo by 604. The beautiful new venue overlooks the Navy Marine Golf Course and is open to the public. This month, the free concert will feature the Hawaiian music trio Maunalua!
The trio is made up of Bobby Moderow, Jr., Kahi Kaonohi, and Richard Gideon. Formed in 1993, Maunalua released its first album in 2000 and promptly won the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for Hawaiian Album of the Year. The group’s second album, released in 2003, brought Nā Hōkū awards for both Group and Favorite Entertainer of the Year. In 2007, Maunalua’s third album was released and won yet another Nā Hōkū Award (Group of the Year). Then in 2015, the band’s fourth album, “He Inoa,” was met with great acclaim.
All strong vocalists, the group is known for its tight harmonies accentuated by Moderowʻs falsetto and prowess with slack key guitar. Long a favorite with audiences all over Hawaii, as well as a number of foreign countries and the continental U.S., Maunalua’s always-entertaining performances range from fun, high energy songs to sweet and soulful ballads, interspersed with banter between the three group members and with the audience.
Whether performing for hundreds at inauguration festivities for the newly-elected President Obama in 2009, or for a few dozen people at a backyard paʻina, Maunalua never disappoints.
So here’s your chance to catch Maunalua performing live on Thursday, February 20, at Mangiamo by 604. The event is free and starts at 6 p.m. Be on the lookout for more concerts with talented local musicians during the HI Now Live Music Series including a performance by Josh Tatofi on March 19.
