If you’re a fan of the former Home Bar & Grill, then you need to check out Hamada General Store in Kakaako! The masterminds behind all your favorite food are back with more ono grinds. HI Now host Jobeth Devera is in Kakaako checking out what’s on the menu.
Hamada General Store was founded by Cuatro Food, Inc. in 2008 by Neil Nakasone, John Estrella and Brandon Hamada. All three partners met and opened the Pineapple Room at Macy’s in 1999. In 2008, they set out to change the food demographics of Sports Bars in Hawaii by opening both Kanpai and Home Bar & Grill. Their vision is to carry on the legacy of providing good food with a sense of place, always served with aloha.
“We took our concept here,” Hamada says. “We changed a few dishes — do more local style comfort food.”
Originally a grocery store, H. Hamada Store had catered to local clientele on Queen Street since 1958 and closed its doors in 2007. Hamada General Store is now a restaurant that focuses on take out and catering, rooted in the same values as the original H. Hamada Store and proudly serving the community with aloha.
Some of the fan favorites? First up is the tofu and salmon salad made with fresh salmon, local watercress, tofu, cucumber, tomato and a soy vinaigrette. There’s also a delicious tonkatsu sandwich re-imagined with an Asian slaw, hot mustard, and a brioche bun.
If you’re missing the food from Home Bar, try the Japanese style hamburger steak! It’s a new take on the restaurant’s Wafu Steak.
“I like daikon and ponzu on beef, so this is a hamburger patty with daikon ponzu crispy onions,” Hamada explains.
Hamada General Store is open from 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is closed on Sunday.
