Don’t fret the doctor! Here’s why you should schedule your annual physical exam

When it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, most of us think diet and exercise, but according to doctors, getting annual screenings and physicals are just as important. HI Now host Kanoe Gibson went to Adventist Primary Care in Kailua for her physical check-up and to speak with a doctor about the importance of these annual exams.

The focus of annual wellness exams are mainly for preventive care and ensuring all health measures are cleared, including immunizations and health screenings for cancer and blood pressure. Routine visits focus more on treatment and follow-up of acute issues and chronic conditions. Doctors recommend seeing your doctor regularly for screenings and exams. Women over 21 should see their gynecologist annually for cervical cancer screenings and women over 40 should be getting regular mammograms to detect breast cancer. Men over the age of 40 should get a colonoscopy to screen for colon cancer.

“Knowledge is power. It might be scary to learn that something is wrong, but if we can detect something early and start treatment early, your prognosis can be that much better,” said Adventist Primary Care Physician Dr. Angela McCarthy.

If you are in need of a primary care physician, Adventist Primary Care is accepting new patients in 2019.
