Don’t be ashamed, there’s help in pelvic floor rehabilitation

REHAB Hospital of the Pacific

November is Bladder Health Awareness Month and the doctors at REHAB Hospital of the Pacific want you to know that you don’t have to be embarrassed or ashamed if you suffer from incontinence. Physical therapy to stretch tight muscles, strengthen weak ones and improve flexibility is often used to treat urinary incontinence, which affects about 80% of women and 30% of men.

One of Hawaii’s local resources is REHAB Hospital’s pelvic floor rehabilitation program. Participants work with a physical therapist on education of how to keep your pelvic floor strong and healthy, and how to address specific symptoms like incontinence, sexual dysfunction, menopausal symptoms, and prostate issues.

Urinary Incontinence, or the loss of bladder control, afflicts more than 25 million Americans, both male and female. But only one out of 12 people affected actually seek help. Research has shown that those who take part in rehabilitation therapy see improvements with their quality of life. The Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation Program at REHAB improves the quality of life in those who experience urinary incontinence or the loss of bladder control, pelvic pain, fecal incontinence, dyspareunia and constipation.

Patients work with a physical therapist to create a program specifically designed to improve pelvic floor health, whether through strengthening or relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles or bladder. The facility offers customized therapeutic exercises and activities to maximize strength and endurance, and one-on-one sessions working with seasoned physical therapists experienced with Pelvic Floor (Urinary and Fecal Incontinence) rehabilitation. REHAB uses the latest in innovative technology to improve quality of life, including Pilates equipment, Gyrotonic equipment, CTS 2000 & MR-20 Biofeedback Equipment and Alter-G.

The benefits of pelvic floor rehabilitation include improved pelvic floor muscle strength, endurance and relaxation, bladder training and improved bladder and bowel control.
