Sponsored by Grand Naniloa Resort

Experience the natural wonders of the coasts of Keaukaha and Hilo Palikū aboard a double-hulled Hawaiian sailing canoe! HI Now host Kanoe Gibson is checking out Hawaiian Ocean Edventures, the only Hawaiian Sailing Canoe service offered in Eastern Hawai’i.

Fashioned after the Voyaging canoe Hōkūalakaʻi, sailing canoes at Hawaiian Ocean Edventures offer the unique experience of seafaring in the tradition of its Polynesian ancestors. With skilled, passionate local guides, you will learn about the history of Polynesian wayfinding while exploring Hawaii’s beautiful coastline and marine life, a fun and exciting way to experience Hawaiian culture and natural history.

Hawaiian Ocean Edventures was established in October 2015 in Hilo, Hawaii and is owned and operated by Kalani Kahalioumi. Kahalioumi builds the double-hulled sailing canoes using traditional methods and local hardwoods. He was also a captain on Hōkūle’a and was part of the recent voyage around the world.

Inspired by Eddie Aikau, Papa Mau, Tava Taupu, and Chad Kalepa Baybayan, Kahalioumi is eager to share Hawaiian voyaging and the aloha spirit with visitors. Of his many voyages, most notable were those to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands of Mokumānāna, Nihoa, Kaʻula, Niʻihau, and a round-trip voyage to Aotearoa (New Zealand).

The Wa’a Sailing Tour at Hawaiian Ocean Edventures offers the experience of a lifetime as guests get a glimpse into the past during an unparalleled exploration of East Hawaii’s marine life and coastline. Your guide will share personal voyage stories and you will learn the history of how Hilo was named as you ride the waves of the Pacific Ocean. After your voyage, learn to make a rope lei, a symbol of Hilo, and a keepsake from your journey.

Hawaiian Ocean Edventures also offers snorkel, paddleboard, and cone rentals. If you’re not quite comfortable on your own yet, you can also learn the basics of stand-up paddle boarding in gentle waters.
