Max Holloway takes on Alexander Volkanovski at UFC Fight Island
The Blessed Express is on the move in Abu Dhabi ahead of the inaugural UFC Fight Island card.
Waianae native Max Holloway’s (21-5 MMA,17-5 UFC) much anticipated rematch against Alexander Volkanovski (21-1 MMA, 8-0 UFC) will be the second of two world championship fights to be decided on July 11th at UFC 251.
Holloway will look to exact revenge against the talented Volkanovski, who put a pause to the ‘Blessed Era’ at UFC 245, becoming the first Featherweight fighter since Conor McGregor to defeat Holloway at 145 lbs after scoring a unanimous decision victory.
Holloway had won 14 consecutive fights in the division before falling to Volkanovski and successfully defended the title three consecutive times besting Brian Ortega, Frankie Edgar, and Jose Aldo.
The Holloway and Volkanovski bout will serve as the co-headliner at UFC 251 as the card will be highlighted by a Welterweight title fight between Kamaru Usman and rising superstar Jorge Masvidal.
While fireworks are certain to take place in this first of it’s kind event, Holloway won’t be the only Hawaiian fighter on the card.
Kailua’s Martin Day will open the prelims in a bantamweight bout with Davey Grant to kickoff the action.
During the COVID-19 pandemic Holloway stated that he rarely saw his coaches in preparation for the bout as a precaution to keep himself and the rest of his team safe.
However, Holloway seems confident in the work he has physically engaged in while training in his hometown of Waianae and anticipates the best version of himself come fight night.
Hawaii News Now was there before Holloway departed for UFC’s Fight Island and Holloway seemed calm and collected ahead of his rematch.
UFC 251 will take place at 4:00 p.m. HST and can be purchased on pay per view via the ESPN + app.
