Big Island Abalone: 10-acre aquafarm offers premium, live abalone

The only ezo abalone aquaculture company in the United States

Sponsored by Hawaii State Department of Agriculture

On this weekend’s Seal of Quality Saturday, HI Now hosts Kanoe Gibson and Kainoa Carlson are getting a look at some seafood delicacies from Big Island Abalone! The Big Island company is the only ezo abalone aquaculture farm in the United States.

If you didn’t know, abalone is a kind of sea-snail. The delicacy takes about 3 – 4 years to get to an edible size, so it can be expensive, but expect pure deliciousness with plenty of health benefits. Abalone are high in protein and low in fat and cholesterol, and because of this, they are called “the emperor of shellfish” in Japan. Abalone can help reduce heart disease, help with kidney health and eyesight, and even relieve muscle cramps. The seafood is also known to improve circulation in the body, is beneficial for weight loss, and is good for your hair, nails, and teeth!

The farm is just a five-minute drive from the Kona airport. If you can’t make it there, you can also find Big Island Abalone products in Honolulu at its Market City storefront, the KCC Farmers Market, and the Kakaako Farmers Market. You can also order online at bigislandabalone.com.
