Calamari waffle?! 'Nuff said!

Sponsored by Uahi Island Grill

When it comes to the weekend, there are few things better than brunch! HI Now host Kanoe Gibson is at Uahi Island Grill in Kailua with Nick Yamada, owner and head chef, to see what’s on the menu.

Uahi Island Grill is open for brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Some of the restaurant’s most popular dishes are, of course, the classic loco moco, and its housemade smothered biscuits — the crab cake, specifically. Feeling adventurous? Why not try the breakfast bibimbap or a calamari waffle! It’s like Okonomiyaki meets chicken and waffles. These waffles are all made-in house, no box mix here!

“I was inspired by takoyai and we were just trying to think of another savory waffle,” says Yamada. Come hungry, because the servings are no joke! The rest of your weekend plans? Cancel them, because you’re in for a kanak attack.

You can’t have brunch without cocktails! The Bloody Mary is like brunch in a cup, and you’ve got to try its signature Aloha Blue Hawaii.

Don’t forget to try out all the food at Uahi Island Grill! The restaurant is known for signature dishes like Red Curry Fish, Seared Ahi, Korean Steak Salad, its Tamarind Burger, Furikake Calamari, and the Kalua Pork with Kale. Hours are Monday- Friday from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.

About Nick Yamada:
Nick “Bear” Yamada is a Kailua local and graduated from the Culinary Arts Program at Kapiolani Community College. At age 18, he began working in restaurants as a dishwasher and worked his way up to head chef. At age 28, he saved up enough money to open his own restaurant, Uahi Island Grill. It began as a small restaurant with only three tables on Oneawa Street in Kailua. When that space became too small, he moved locations to a larger space on Hekili Street in Kailua. In 2016, Uahi Island Grill was opened in its current location.
