Board of Water Supply Chair gives insight on Red Hill situation

HONOLULU (HI Now) - As a result of the Red Hill water contamination issue, the Board of Water Supply had to stop using the Halawa Shaft and has shut down pumps and wells in that area as a precautionary measure. This reduced the amount of water supply to metropolitan Honolulu by 20%. Recent tests have confirmed there has been cross-contamination and the presence of petroleum products in the aquifer near the Red Hill facility.

To make up the difference in water supply, the Board of Water Supply has had to rely on other pumps in its water system, and now this is having other consequences. Because of the need to over-pump, this has drawn up salt water which typically would remain untouched below the freshwater. So the Board of Water Supply team has curtailed pumping activity from these other sources for now. That’s why conservation is even more important now.
