With almost 70 years of history in Hawaii, Fujiya Hawaii was originally located in Kalihi. In September of 2020, it reopened after moving to a new location at 930 Hauʻoli St. in McCully-Mōʻiliʻili. The store is now open Monday – Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

“Fujiya itself has been around since 1953, and it’s passed on through many generations. We’re probably best known for our mochi and our senbei products.”

Fujiya’s products are rooted in a culture that has evolved alongside of Hawaii’s culture in order to create a mix of the best of both worlds.

“It’s not just the Japanese culture that you get from mochi and some of those senbei and some of those things, but the Hawaii infusion of flavor and ingredients that probably has some history in what was available at the time,” says Co-owner Chris Kanemura. “I just find that a beautiful thing because we love to not just serve Japanese confectionaries, but it’s Japanese and Hawaii confectionaries.”

Its products “HAWAIʻI WAGASHI” are made in Hawaii and rooted in traditional Japanese sweets called WAGASHI — the fusion of Japanese and Hawaii flavors! One of its best selling products is the fresh strawberry mochi. If you’re looking to try this treat, better get there early, as it often sells out quickly!

“Special for the New Year’s and Christmas season, we have our pink and white chi chi dango,” “Pink is our regular flavor. White is our coconut, our haupia flavored chi chi dango. Pink and white in Japanese culture are some lucky colors. I think everybody’s looking for a little bit of encouragement and some luck in this new year.”
