When it comes to finding good food, you always want to go where the locals eat. That’s why HI Now host Kanoe Gibson is headed to Fatboy’s in Kalihi.
“We’re actually really known for our local food,” says Kalihi Supervisor Karla Sison. “One of our owners owns a fish boat, so every day we have fresh fish.”
Since the Kalihi location has fresh ahi every day, one of its specialties is the spicy ahi. In the fresh poke case, you can find a variety of options to make your own poke bowl.
Fatboy’s in Kalihi just recently opened earlier in the year. With the impacts of COVID, the restaurant continues to survive, but Sison says its their loyal customers who make it all worthwhile.
“We’re surviving,” she says. “We have our loyal customers coming in and helping us out. We’re so grateful!”
In 1999, with just a single location in the hard-to-find Sand Island industrial area, Fatboy’s was established by Carrol Ung and his father. Their simple goal was to provide a local plate lunch menu filled with local favorite complemented by daily gourmet specials.
The menu consisted of Garlic Chicken, Beef Stew, Hamburger Steak and Chicken Katsu. There was also a generous selection of comfort and gourmet food items like Baked Mushroom Chicken, Roast Turkey, Grilled Ahi, and Crab Stuffed Mahi Mahi. Almost immediately, the menu became popular among the blue collar workers in the area. With excellent customer service and quality food, the little hole-in-the-wall quickly became a destination for many outside the area.
Today, with five locations around Oahu, the same original goal persists: To provide good tasting, quality food at reasonable prices while also maintaining a true sense of aloha in everything Fatboy’s does.
