Maui food truck helps feed those in need with virtual tip jar

Sponsored by Hawaii Gas

One of the greatest things coming out of the COVID-19 Pandemic is seeing how businesses and organizations are rising up to help those in need. Maui Fresh Streatery has partnered with community members like Hawaii Gas to help feed our kupuna and those less fortunate on the Valley Isle.

Maui Fresh Streatery is a food truck owned by Chef Kyle Kawakami. As a purveyor of supporting local, Kawakami uses the freshest ingredients from farmers, hunters, and fishermen in Hawaii and creates a rotating menu each week of varying cuisines from around the world. All of the food truck appliances are 100 percent powered by Hawaii Gas propane.

“Having worked in commercial kitchens and teaching, you can’t beat gas — it’s quick response, its nice steady heat– it’s clean burning. It’s really the best out there in terms of professional cooking,” said Kawakami.

Kawakami initially closed the food truck in early March, but has since opened up with a new “zero contact” food service concept.

“We’ve set up what is almost like a drive thru,” said Kawakami.

Kawakami is no longer cooking food to order, but instead offering meal prep options where customers can drive through and pick up pre-packaged fully cooked meals that can be reheated throughout the week.

Since its opening in 2003, Maui Fresh Streatery had what is called the Aloha Tip Jar. Any tip money collected is donated to various non-profits at the end of each month. Since the pandemic, Kawakami has shifted to a virtual tip jar and has set his focus on feeding kupuna and those in need. Hawaii Gas recently made a generous donation of $2000 to help continue Kawakami’s efforts.
